,

This post contains completist/fanatic exercise on Frank Zappa/Mothers’ performances from the Fillmore East (June 5 & 6) 1971 shows. The were released across:

  • Zappa/Mothers – Fillmore East – June 1971
  • John Lennon – Sometime in New York City (Side 4)
  • Frank Zappa – Playground Psychotics (tracks 22–26)

In summary, the task aims to identify the correct chronological song order, compare edits, over-dubs, and missing dialogue, and list which portions from each release to use to reconstruct the full original performance as faithfully as possible. There is also timing guidance included for splicing.

Research from 13 sources, put together with the help of ChatGPT

Background & Sources of the 6 June 1971 Encore

On June 6, 1971 (late show) at the Fillmore East in NYC, Frank Zappa and The Mothers brought out John Lennon and Yoko Ono for an encore jam. They performed four pieces in sequence:

  1. “Well (Baby Please Don’t Go)” – a cover of a 1958 R&B song by The Olympics, sung by John.
  2. Zappa’s “King Kong” – an instrumental improvisation featuring Yoko’s wails and a Don Preston keyboard solo (Lennon/Ono later retitled this jam “Jamrag” on their album).
  3. “Scumbag” – a blues-rock vamp where John ad-libs the word “scumbag” and the band (including Mark Volman & Howard Kaylan of The Mothers) join in with comedic vocals.
  4. “Au” – an avant-garde free-form noise piece with Yoko’s vocal improvisation (screams) and John creating guitar feedback.

Spoken interludes during this encore were minimal. Zappa did introduce Lennon and Ono on stage (this intro was not included on the original albums). During the jam, the “dialogue” consisted mostly of ad-libbed vocals – for example, Yoko shouting “please” during the “Jamrag”/King Kong improv and Volman/Kaylan joking about putting Yoko “in a scumbag” during “Scumbag”. These humorous asides were an organic part of the performance.

There are three principal audio sources for this encore, each with differences in editing, mixing, and content:

  • Original Zappa Album – Fillmore East – June 1971 (1971): Did not include the Lennon/Ono encore at all. The original LP ends before “Well” (the encore material only surfaced later). Note: The 50th Anniversary 2022 reissue does include the complete encore as bonus tracks, but the original 1971 release omitted it entirely.
  • John Lennon/Yoko Ono – Some Time in New York City (1972) – specifically the bonus live disc (Side 4, titled “Live Jam”) which first released the encore. Lennon’s versions are titled “Well (Baby Please Don’t Go)”, “Jamrag”, “Scumbag”, and “Au”. These were Phil Spector-produced mixes with Lennon/Ono’s stamp: for example, they claimed writing credit on “Jamrag” (actually Zappa’s “King Kong”) and overdubbed bassist Klaus Voormann onto parts of the tape later. Lennon’s mix edits out or lowers some of The Mothers’ contributions (notably Volman & Kaylan’s vocals), but is otherwise fairly complete in content.
  • Frank Zappa/Mothers – Playground Psychotics (1992): Zappa’s own mix of the Fillmore tape, finally released 20 years later. Zappa included the encore as tracks 22–26 on disc one, with new titles: “Well”, “Say Please”, “Aaawk”, “Scumbag”, “A Small Eternity with Yoko Ono”. His mix favors The Mothers’ performance (Volman/Kaylan’s vocals are restored loudly in “Scumbag”) and is cleaner/instrumentally detailed, but he edited out the explicit “King Kong” theme melody (splitting that jam into the two tracks “Say Please” and “Aaawk”) and trimmed down Yoko’s “Au” by a couple of minutes.

Below is a track-by-track comparison of how each source presents the encore, and which portions are missing or altered on each. This will clarify which source to use for each part in order to reconstruct the full performance in the correct order, with all songs and on-stage dialogue unedited.

Track-by-Track Comparison of the Encore Sources

Encore SegmentFillmore East 1971 (Zappa’s original LP)Lennon’s Live Jam (1972)Zappa’s Playground Psychotics (1992)Notes on Edits & Differences
Intro Dialogue (Zappa introduces John & Yoko)Not included
– the 1971 album omits the encore entirely.
Not included as a separate track. The Live Jam disc jumps straight into “Well”. Any brief intro is folded into the start of “Well” (minimal if at all). Not included as a separate track. (The 1992 CD also starts directly with “Well”. The 2022 reissue finally includes Frank’s intro on tape.)No official source from 1971–1992 includes the stage introduction. For reconstruction, a bootleg or the 2022 release would be needed for Frank’s exact intro remarks (e.g. “I’d like to introduce… John Lennon and Yoko Ono!”), since the original releases start the audio with the music.
“Well (Baby Please Don’t Go)” – 4:40–4:45 minNot on original LP. (Added in 2022 reissue as track 13)Included – Track 1 on the Live Jam disc (side 4). Unedited performance (4:41). Mix produced by Spector; John’s vocals and guitar are prominent. Klaus Voormann overdubbed some bass lines onto this track later in the studio.Included – Track 22 “Well” (4:43). This is the same performance, remixed by Zappa (The Mothers’ instrumentation is clearer). No overdubs – this is the authentic live audio. No cuts in content on either version. Both albums present the full song. Differences are only in mix: Lennon’s mix centers on his voice (and added bass), while Zappa’s mix reflects the live sound (band and backing vocals more audible). For reconstruction, either source covers the entire song, but Zappa’s mix (Playground) is generally preferred for fidelity.
Improv Jam (“King Kong”) – approx. 5:30 min – Lennon title: “Jamrag”Not on original LP. (2022 reissue tracks 14 “Say Please” + 15 “Aaawk” cover this jam)Included – Track 2 “Jamrag” (5:36). This contains the full improvisation: starts with Zappa conducting silly vocal sounds (the band/audience saying “Please!” etc.), then Zappa’s “King Kong” melody is played, leading into Don Preston’s extended keyboard solo with Yoko’s vocalizations. Credited wrongly to Lennon/Ono on the album (they retitled Zappa’s composition).Included in two parts: Track 23 “Say Please” (0:57) and Track 24 “Aaawk” (2:59). Zappa split this jam into two tracks, omitting the brief “King Kong” theme section. “Say Please” covers the opening “Say please” comedy/improv segment (band and Yoko responding to Frank’s hand signals, with Yoko screaming “Please!”). “Aaawk” picks up mid-jam (the instrumental solo section). Both are remixed to feature the band’s playing.Major difference: Lennon’s track **“Jamrag” includes the “King Kong” riff and the entire jam, whereas Zappa’s release cuts out the recognizable theme (likely to avoid using the melody that Lennon had appropriated). Zappa’s “Aaawk” is slightly shorter – the solo jam fades out a bit sooner. Otherwise, performance is the same. No known Lennon edits here (aside from the mix and retitling).
“Scumbag” – 4:30–5:55 min jamNot on original LP. (2022 reissue track 16)Included – Track 3 “Scumbag” (4:27). Heavily edited: Lennon’s mix fades out earlier and mixed down the Mothers’ backing vocals. Notably, Mark Volman & Howard Kaylan’s ad-libbed lines (e.g. joking about “putting Yoko in a scumbag”) are barely audible or cut. This mix highlights John and Yoko’s voices and guitar.Included – Track 25 “Scumbag” (5:53). Complete performance with no cuts. Zappa’s mix has the Mothers’ vocals restored at full volume – you can clearly hear Volman/Kaylan chanting and joking in counterpoint to John and Yoko. The track runs longer into the jam before ending.Content differences: Lennon’s version omits some of the best on-stage banterper Zappa, “they turned off some of the words … and left some of the best stuff out”. Zappa’s version preserves the entire jam, including the humorous background shouts about Yoko and other ad-libs that were almost mixed out on Lennon’s LP.
“Au” (Yoko’s free-form finale) – 6:10–8:05 minNot on original LP. (2022 reissue track 17)Included – Track 4 “Au” (8:04). This is the full unedited cacophonous finale: the band gradually deconstructs while Yoko screams and vocalizes for ~8 minutes, with John adding feedback on guitar. Ends with audience applause.Included – Track 26 “A Small Eternity with Yoko Ono” (6:07). Zappa edited this down to ~6 min (hence the tongue-in-cheek title). The mix is again different (perhaps less echo, more direct instrument sound), but the key difference is it fades out much earlier, cutting about 2 minutes of Yoko’s screams and the very end of the piece.Content differences: Lennon’s album gives the complete experience of Yoko’s extended vocal improvisation (for better or worse, it runs two minutes longer than Zappa’s cut). Zappa’s edit is abridged – it captures the essence but fades before the true end. No other overdubs/edits known (aside from the bass overdub common to all Lennon’s tracks).

Key edit/overdub summary: In Lennon’s Sometime in NYC mix (1972), Klaus Voormann’s bass was overdubbed on some or all of these tracks later, and Phil Spector’s mix tends to favor Lennon/Ono while subduing The Mothers’ contributions. Lennon’s version renamed Zappa’s “King Kong” to “Jamrag” and took songwriter credit for it. It also muted portions of the “Scumbag” vocals (excising the Flo & Eddie satire). In Zappa’s Playground Psychotics mix (1992), no new overdubs were added – it’s the raw live performance – and Zappa’s edits were mainly to remove the “King Kong” theme segment (splitting the jam into “Say Please”/“Aaawk”) and to shorten Yoko’s shrieking finale for brevity. Zappa’s mix notably restored the missing vocals in “Scumbag” and generally made the Mothers louder in the mix. The 1971 Fillmore album contributed no material to the Lennon/Ono encore (it was simply absent).

Step-by-Step Reconstruction Guide

Using the above sources, we can splice together the most complete, unedited version of the encore in the correct running order. The recommended approach is to use Zappa’s Playground Psychotics tracks as the base for superior audio quality and completeness of band content, filling in the specific gaps using Lennon’s Live Jam tracks where Zappa made cuts. Below is a step-by-step assembly guide with timing notes:

  1. “Well (Baby Please Don’t Go)” – Use Playground Psychotics track 22 “Well” in its entirety (0:00–4:43) for the complete performance of this song. This covers John’s introduction riff, all verses, and the ending. (Lennon’s version is nearly identical in length/content, so either could be used, but Zappa’s mix ensures all instruments and backing vocals are audible. If desired, one could cross-fade Lennon’s track for any subtle mix differences or the overdubbed bass, but this is optional.)
  2. Improv Jam (“King Kong”/“Jamrag”) – Reconstruct this as one continuous piece:
    • Start with Playground track 23 “Say Please” (0:00–0:57). This captures the quirky opening improvisation where Zappa “conducts” the band and audience in a call-and-response (the Mothers shouting “ah”, Yoko screaming “please!”, etc.). The track ends just before the band would launch into the “King Kong” theme.
    • Next, to include the missing “King Kong” melody, splice in audio from Lennon’s “Jamrag” (track 2 of the Live Jam disc). Insert the portion corresponding to the main theme riff and any immediately ensuing jam that Zappa cut. In practice, this is roughly a few seconds in – find where the signature “King Kong” vamp begins on “Jamrag” and take about ~30–60 seconds of audio (up until the extended keyboard solo starts). This ensures the recognizable Zappa-composed theme is heard (which Zappa omitted on Playground).
    • Then, continue with Playground track 24 “Aaawk” (0:00 until end, ~2:59). Align it so that it picks up seamlessly after the theme you inserted. “Aaawk” contains the bulk of the instrumental jam – Don Preston’s electric piano/Mini-Moog solo and Yoko’s wordless vocals over the grooving rhythm section. Zappa’s track should carry you through to the end of the improv jam. (On Lennon’s “Jamrag”, this solo section is already there – you’re essentially using Zappa’s cleaner mix for it.)
    • Result: The combined “Say Please” + “King Kong” theme (from Jamrag) + “Aaawk” will re-create the full “Jamrag” jam as performed. Double-check the splice points: you may need to adjust volume or do a gentle crossfade when going from Playground to Live Jam and back, since the mixes differ. Once spliced, you’ll have the complete ~5½-minute jam, with all elements (the conducted intro, the King Kong riff, the solos) intact.
  3. “Scumbag” – Use Playground Psychotics track 25 “Scumbag” (0:00–5:53) for the entire song. This is the unedited performance with all vocals and jam segments included. You’ll hear John and Yoko chanting “Scumbag” repeatedly, while Howard Kaylan and Mark Volman harmonize and ad-lib humorously in the background (e.g. suggestions to “put Yoko in a scumbag” as a surreal joke). Zappa’s version preserves these bits (which are almost inaudible on Lennon’s mix). No splicing needed here, as Playground’s track is complete. (Lennon’s Live Jam “Scumbag” is shorter and missing content, so it’s not ideal – however, you might choose to cross-fade the very end of Zappa’s track with the end of Lennon’s if you want to capture the exact moment of transition into “Au” as on Lennon’s album. In practice, the transition is just a brief pause before Yoko starts wailing, so this is usually unnecessary.) Ensure that the applause or noise floor at the end of “Scumbag” flows naturally into the next piece.
  4. “Aü” (Yoko’s vocal solo) – Begin with Playground Psychoticstrack 26 “A Small Eternity with Yoko Ono” from 0:00 onward. This covers roughly the first 6:07 of the “Au” performance. You’ll hear the band already in meltdown mode: screeching feedback from John’s guitar, random drum hits, and Yoko’s keening wails. Zappa’s mix captures this with clarity (and a slightly earlier fade-out). To get the complete ending, you must append the missing portion from Lennon’s “Au”:
    • As Zappa’s track approaches its end (around 5:45–6:00), prepare a crossfade into Lennon’s “Au” at the corresponding point (about 5:45 into the 8:04 track). Playground fades out while Yoko is still screaming; on Live Jam, her screams continue. Splice in the remaining ~2 minutes from 5:53 (or wherever Zappa’s audio cuts) to 8:04 of Lennon’s “Au”. This segment contains Yoko’s sustained screaming/climactic howls and the true end of the performance (which likely concludes with the band fully stopped and audience applause). By using Lennon’s track for the finale, you restore the missing “small eternity” of Yoko’s solo that Zappa chose to cut.
    • Adjust the levels if needed; Lennon’s mix may have more reverb. The goal is a seamless continuation where the listener doesn’t notice the edit – Yoko’s continuous vocalizations can help mask the splice. Now the “Au” segment runs the full ~8 minutes as it did live.
  5. Post-show spoken outro (if any) – In reality, the encore likely ended with the chaotic “Au” dying down and applause. There was no significant on-mic outro by John or Frank on the official recordings. If you have audience tape or the 2022 release, you might include Frank’s final “Good night!” or any thank-you from the band. This is optional; none of the three classic sources include an explicit outro dialog.

Following the above steps will yield a complete and accurate reconstruction of the Lennon/Zappa Fillmore East encore, using the best parts of each source. The final assembled order should be:

“Well (Baby Please Don’t Go)” → “Jamrag/King Kong” improv → “Scumbag” → “Au”, with all original musical content and on-stage commentary restored. The mix will be largely Zappa’s (for clarity and authenticity) with Lennon’s segments filling the gaps (the King Kong theme and Yoko’s full finale). This way, nothing is missing – the full song list and dialogues appear as they happened live, including the portions that were edited, overdubbed, or omitted on one source or another.

By comparing sources and carefully splicing, we’ve essentially recreated the half-hour encore exactly as the audience heard it on June 6, 1971 – an encore that captures a truly unique collaboration between Frank Zappa & The Mothers and John Lennon & Yoko Ono.

STEP 1 – Cue Sheet Creation

Build a cue sheet in .cue format or as a CSV/Markdown file for use in any DAW (Logic, Reaper, Audacity, etc.).
To do this, it is needed:

  • Preferred file format: .cue, .txt, or .csv?
  • The exact track titles and times from the 2022 Fillmore East release (photo/screenshot or type).

STEP 2 – Visual Waveform Plan

Prepare a waveform annotation plan showing:

  • Segment transitions (start/end of songs, audience noise, dialogue).
  • Peaks and drops (for potential fades or edit points).
  • Markers for standout moments (e.g. Zappa’s intro, “scumbag” shouts, Yoko’s scream finale).

Preferred audio editor? (Audacity, Reaper, Logic Pro, or other?)

STEP 3 – Tracklist Compilation with Notes

This will be a PDF booklet-style document or editable text file, showing:

  • Song titles
  • Performance credits
  • Historical notes (e.g. “Originally released as ‘Jamrag’ on Lennon’s Live Jam, retitled and remixed here by Zappa”)
  • Zappa-geek bonus: Include differences from the 5 older versions you own, based on what you remember or share.

STEP 4 – Collector’s Edition Artwork

Create:

  • A mockup of the front/back cover (vintage + avant-garde style options)
  • A disc label design if you want to press your own CD
  • Optional: a booklet cover or inner panel with a timeline of events (June 6, 1971 → 1972 → 1992 → 2022)

What style to choose from?
Minimalist? 1970s Fillmore psychedelic? Bootleg aesthetics? Something Zappaesque and dada?

BONUS: Archive Series Naming

Inspired by different collective projects from the early 2000`s, this exercise’s ultimate goal was brand it in a personal fashion to showcase this and other similar efforts, enriching my already massive Zappa collection, the name and would represent an unofficial personal series. Something like:
